Where we are – in a tranquil rural setting

Aerial view of Berty
Berty, surrounded by trees, with Rouillac above

Berty is in the midst of farmland, surrounded by a rolling landscape in the delightful valley of the Tartuguie. The nearby hamlet of Rouillac has a medieval chapel with 12th century fresco paintings, so it is often visited by pilgrims and hikers on the route of St Jacques, which is one of the great walking routes across France going all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

We are only 5 kms from the medieval market town of MONTCUQ with all shops and services, just 8 kms from LAUZERTE and 20 minutes from CAHORS, the departmental capital of the Lot.

The Lot is now being discovered and appreciated for its beautiful countryside, quiet roads and traditional Quercy stone buildings. What’s more, it is renowned for gastronomic produce and excellent wines. This relatively under-populated part of France is becoming the destination of choice for discerning travellers.

Our nearest airports are Toulouse, Bergerac, Brive, Rodez and Carcassonne.

The nearest train stations are Cahors and Agen. We are 20 minutes from the A20 autoroute.

Relax and unwind, have family fun

solar heated salt water swimming pool

In the heat of the summer, you will enjoy relaxing by the pool, or playing in the spacious grounds; then end the day with a barbecue in the garden and a glass or two of delicious (and inexpensive!) local wine. In the autumn and spring, enjoy days warm enough to eat outdoors and less crowds in the popular tourist spots. In the winter, take walks in the countryside and cosy up in front of the wood burning stove.

This is a beautiful region with plenty of things to see and do. Midi Pyrenees (now Occitanie) is as well known for its beautiful scenery and cultural events, as it is for its good food and wine. There are some lovely places to visit on day excursions and you could take a picnic to enjoy on the banks of the river Lot or one of the other scenic or dramatic locations, like Rocamadour, St Cirq Lapopie or Belaye – or closer still, at the beautiful Lac du St Sernin, just north of Montcuq, with a sandy beach, picnic tables and a restaurant.

Please see the Activities page for more ideas of things to see and do.

If you are feeling energetic, there are tennis courts, canoeing, horse riding and golf nearby; or perhaps you prefer the more leisurely pursuits of fishing or birdwatching, or reading a good book. For family fun there is croquet, table tennis, badminton and boules in the garden. The swings and slides, and trampoline are always popular with youngsters – there is something for everyone.

Spectacular star-gazing under dark skies

Our dark skies (Bortle 3) make for spectacular star-gazing with the naked eye or binoculars. We now have 2 astronomical observatories in the garden, making this a fantastic holiday location for astronomers and astrophotographers, especially in the autumn and spring when the nights are longer. Read more about our setup and facilities on our Astro page.

Whatever the weather, there is always a warm welcome

In general the weather here is much warmer and drier than it is in England and from March through to October it is usually warm enough to enjoy eating lunch in the garden. May and June are often the hottest time of the year, when the long days and balmy nights make outdoor living a real treat, but the landscape is still lush and green and the garden at its best. July and August are the traditional French holiday season, all the places of interest are open, and there are all sorts of special events, feasts and spectacles. Outside of the main holiday season you can enjoy a wonderful late Summer or Autumn break, when the landscape colours start to change and the grapes are ready for harvesting in the local vineyards.

Our heated swimming pool will be open from April to October, and should be comfortably warm.
